From: Oz Shy To: Norman Hendrich Subject: Re: Step-by-step instructions how to install jfig Instructions for installing jfig on Windows XP (and perhaps other versions of Windows) General: The installation process is divided into 3 steps: (I) Installing Java on your Windows machine (from SUN Microsystems) (II) Downloading and installing jfig (from jfig web-site) (III) Install an add-on (optional) Step I: Installing Java (Note: Telephone modems may be too slow for this type of large-file download. I am assuming that you are connected to the Internet via fast Internet or directly through your office) (1) Browse to www.java.sun.com (2) Click on: 'Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE)' (3) Click on: 'J2SE 1.4.2' (4) Click on 'DOWNLOAD' under J2SE v 1.4.2_01 JRE (use Windows Installation if you are on line, otherwise use Offline Installation, download the files and install later on). (5) At the bottom of the long Agreement text click: 'Accept' (6) Save it into an any directory you wish (7) Double-click to execute the '.exe' file you have just downloaded (8) You need to click: 'Accept' again, then 'next' for: typical installation (9) Click: 'Finish' Step II: Installing jfig (1) Go to jfig's web-page: http://tams-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/applets/jfig/index.html (2) Click: 'Download and run jfig' (3) Click: 'Start' on the security warning (4) Click: 'Yes' for integrating it into your desktop (5) You are all set. You can now start the program from either the Start Menu, or by double-clicking the Icon on your desktop. Step III (optional): If you wish to add a utility allowing for more exports, (1) download fig2dev3.2.3d-windows.zip into an empty directory, say c:\fig2dev (2) Unzip into the same directory. (3) Go inside the fig2dev subdirectory and read the README file. Remark: This installation will require you to set the PATH to your chosen directory (c:\fig2dev in our example) *** The End *** Instructions how to Install fig2dev on Windows XP (1) Unzip it into a new directory, say, c:\fig2dev Note: This is tricky! You must put all the files from the subdirectory into c:\fig2dev and not leave the files in the zipped subdirectory !!! (2) Set the path Note: If you use this utility only via the Export-Options function of jfig, you probably don't need to add the path. (3) You are almost all set, except, that on the Export-Options dialog box the default directory lists: c:\windows\fig2dev.exe as the path instead of c:\fig2dev\fig2dev.exe So, you can either change it each time before you use to Export, or, if you dare, you can change it in the Show-Properties dialog box.
